The goal of the three-year PhD program is the training of highly qualified researchers in the area of Physics. The aim is the acquisition of the theoretical and/or experimental instruments in the areas of research actively carried out in the Department.

The lines of research present in the Department of Physics and Mathematics are numerous, covering many areas of modern experimental e theoretical physics, from quantum optics to high-energy particle physics, from quantum computation to laser physics, from cosmology to materials science. The specific study and research programme followed by the different doctoral students is arranged in agreement with and according to needs of the research groups to which they are associated.

In addition to carrying out research, students also participate in a variety of other activities designed to enhance their personal and professional skills. They are expected to attend lectures and seminars given by Italian and foreign researchers visiting the Department. PhD students may also spend some time assisting in undergraduate laboratories or holding undergraduate tutorials. Besides providing some extra income, these duties constitute stimulating and useful teaching experience. Communications skills are honed by presenting seminars on their own research and in other subjects of their choice.

Numerous international collaborations are represented in the Department. PhD students thus have the opportunity of spending a period up to a year in universities and/or research institutions abroad. The PhD programme is open to graduates in any branch of Physics.
