Villa Olmo is an imposing neoclassic building of the 18th
century, now in trust to the Como Town Council.
The well-renowned architect Simone Cantoni designed the Villa,
which is the height of neoclassic architecture in Lombarsy.
The interiors of the Villa
are magnificent, starting from the three-storey
entrance hall and the main hall (a former ball-room), surrounded
by a wrought iron railing and decorated with stucco-works, statues
and reliefs.
Worth mentioning are also the elliptical 'Room of Wedding';
the 'Garibaldi Room'; the small theatre; the family chapel of the
Odescalchis and finally the 'Music Room'.
Going up the main staircase we find the 'Olimpus Room' decorated
by wonderful frescoes and the 'Room of the Visconti di Modrone'.
The framework to the Villa is a century-old park where originally
there was an elm-tree after which the building was named; along
the lakeshore geometrical flowers beds decorate the front garden
in a pure Italian style.
A pictoresque promenade leads downtown in about ten minutes walking along
the ancient and elegant villas of the Borgovico District ("Borgo di Vico").
Since 1982 the Villa has been the home of the
"Alessandro Volta"
Center of Scientific Culture, and hosts its international events.
